Gok Wan’s beauty tips for spectacle wearers

Gok Wan is the much loved guru for self conscious women everywhere, and he’s known for his helpful advice with a touch of humour, having spent a long time making women feel more comfortable about their bodies. He’s branched out into beauty, and is now helping glasses wearing girls. The rhyme ‘Guys don’t make passes at girls who wear glasses’, is soo last year, and his tips will turn beleaguered four-eyes into the height of Geek Chic. Read on for his tips.
Just as you put a lot of thought into choosing the perfect pair of glasses, you should not over look the importance of well applied make-up to help frame the eyes and flatter your face shape. Lenses can sometimes make your eyes appear bigger or smaller and even change your skin tone, so using these make-up tips will help minimise any distortion caused by your prescription lenses, as well as complimenting this season’s hottest fashion statements.
- Short Sight – lenses will make your eyes appear smaller. Apply bold make-up to emphasise them. Use lighter colours on the inner corners, blending into deeper, darker shades at the outer corners to add emphasis and to make your eyes look bigger. Use dark or lash-building mascara.
- Long Sight – lenses will make your eyes appear magnified. Apply make-up sparingly and blend colours carefully. Use concealer or a slightly lighter foundation under the eyes. Dark mascara gives definition, but avoid harsh eyeliners or thick mascara – blobs and smudges will be magnified too!
- False eyelashes, especially packs of individual ones, are a fantastic way of adding glamour on the go.
Hair tips
It’s not just the colour of your hair that can affect your choice of glasses – the way your hair is cut and styled can too.
- Reflect angular frames with short, geometric styles, or soften your hair cut with an oval shaped frame.
- Enhance soft and curly hairstyles by wearing delicate shapes, rimless frames and translucent colours.
- Small classic styles work best with tight curls but make sure you also choose a frame shape that follows your brow line.
- If you have short hair or a style that is tied at the back, experiment with bold designs or more decorative styles to draw attention to your face.
- With long hair check how different frames look with your hair loose, held back or bunched on top of your head. Keep your fringe regularly trimmed so that it’s not too long or too heavy.
