The average British woman’s makeup bag is out of date by a worrying four years, new research from Debenhams has revealed today.

British women are using makeup well past the use-by date, unaware that products can be a magnet for germs which could cause damage to their health and looks.

Product Recommended use by dates  (And how long you’ll keep them for in reality):

• Mascara 4-6 months (12 months!)
• Highlighter 6 months (24 months!)
• Concealer 6-12 months (24 months!)
• Liquid Foundation 12 months (12 months)
• Eye shadow / blush 18-24 months (180 months!!)
• Eyebrow pencil 18 months (96 months!!)
• Cream Blush 12 months (24 months!)
• Pressed / loose powder 12 months (18 months!)
• Liquid Bronzer 12 months (36 months!)
• Powder Bronzer 30 months (48 months!)
• Lipstick / Lip Gloss 12-24 months (120 months!!)
• Eye / Lip liner 18 months (12 months)
• Perfume 36 months (96 months!)
• Hand cream 12-24 months  (6 months)
• Lip balm 24 months (12 months)

Sara Stern, Director of Cosmetics at Debenhams said, “British women are famously loyal to make up brands and products, however, their reluctance to throw away old products is a risky business.”

Favourite beauty essentials such as foundation, concealer, blusher, eyeshadow, eyeliner, mascara, lipstick and perfume all include a ‘period after opening’ indicator, denoted by an open pot with the number of months of safe use written inside. Despite European Union guidelines meaning brands have to state product shelf lives, 89 per cent of women are unaware that such information exists, do not understand what the symbol means or are unable to read the often tiny writing.

Make-up, perfume and skincare products used after the expiry date carry a risk of irritation and infection. This is due to air and bacteria infiltrating the products. Multiuse products carry an even higher risk as they can spread germs from eyes to skin to lips.

To add to the shock horror factor, 60 per cent of women admitted they shared make-up with friends and family, multiplying the chances of infection.

• 68% of women only replace make-up and skincare when they run out, however long that might take.
• 72% of women never wash their make up sponges or brushes, even though they should do at least once a week.
• 81% of British women also regularly (at least once a week) go to sleep without removing make up.

As a result of the findings, Debenhams is exploring ways in which the ‘best before’ date of products can be better communicated to customers. Staff members are being trained to point out the importance of regularly replacing products and a ‘make up’ amnesty is planned nationwide.The retailer has also written to the Secretary of State for Health, the Rt Hon Andy Burnham MP to push for further legislation to cover the safety of consumers.

Sara Stern concludes, “Hopefully this call to action will encourage women to have a ruthless spring clean of their cosmetics collections. All our Beauty Hall staff members are on hand to advise customers of the use-by dates of their current items and help replenish any empty cosmetic bags”.

The recession may have meant people have had to cut back, but one area there’s no need to skimp is in the eyebrow department. Big brows are back with a vengeance with everyone from runway models to celebrities channeling the look- somewhere between monobrow and a bushy ponytail. Think Brooke Shields when she was younger and you’ll know just what I’m getting at. But how do you get that lustrous thick look- especially if you’ve over plucked slightly? We show you how.

Step One: Tweeze

Tweeze, you cry! How can you get huge brows if you remove hairs? Well, you can STILL have big brows if you tweeze- it’s all about being big and groomed not Escape of the Loch Ness Monster. Make sure you use a quality pair like one from Tweezerman to remove all the stray hairs from the centre, and any ones that fall really far below the brows.

Step Two: Style

Using a good quality wax or gel such as Benefit Cosmetics Qucik Speed Brow gel, run it through the eyebrow hairs to make sure they’re all going in the same direction.  Be sure to apply the product evenly through the hairs and to use a brush to tidy them up, as you want to be as groomed as possible.

Step Three: Colour

Choose a colour that matches your eyebrow hair very closely, or a shade darker if you’re going for more drama. Using an applicator lightly coat the brows with the colour, and again, make sure that you sweep it on in one direction for added symmetry.

Step Four: Fill

You’ve used colour on the brows with shadow, but now you want to create the illusion of thickness. Do this with a pencil (like this one), and make small lines in the brow area, sketching in more hair for that thick look you’re after. It’s OK to be imprecise as drama is the buzzword here, just make sure to blend afterwards.

I’ve been playing around with some lovely shimmery eye-shadow beauty looks recently and have found a few star products by Benefit that can help to achieve a subtle, sexy shimmer. Keep reading after the jump to see my beauty tutorial detailing how to create this simple and versatile look.

This is a really simple look to achieve and leaves your eyes looking bright and sparkly. Simply follow the steps below and make sure you let us know how you get on and perhaps how else you think we can achieve similar styles using other brands!

Benefit Cream Eyeshadow – Gossip

Benefit Creaseless Cream Eyeshadow/Liner in Gossip is a silvery plum shade that will guarantee you look gorgeous as it lines shades and contours your eyes. And what’s more this delicate shade will stay put all day and night. Simply use the tip of your finger to sweep a small amount of this crème evenly over your eyelids.

Follow with a light dusting of Benefit ‘Miss Moon’ shimmer powder which can be applied using a small brush (tap the excess powder off) gently dabbed onto the eyelids. Don’t be tempted to sweep it across as this may disturb the Benefit Eyeshadow you have already applied.

When you are happy with the amount of shimmer, curl your eyelashes and coat with Benefit Badgal Waterproof Mascara

Even the toughest thunderstorms are no match for this waterproof smudge-proof mascara from Benefit. Layer it on for lush lashes that will last through storm clouds showers and more!

Add a touch of black eyeliner and there you have a simple yet pretty eyeshadow effect that literally takes a few minutes to apply. Light, fresh and delicate!

This look can be glammed up with extra glitter for a night out or made work/daywear friendly by going easy on the Miss Moon shimmer powder. Team with jeans and a floaty pastel coloured top to create a look that is perfect for springtime.

Fearne Cotton is modern, stylish and always up to date with the latest beauty and fashion trends. With the help  of celebrity Make-up artist Jackie Tyson we show you how to recreate her recent beauty style from the National Television Awards.

Celebrity make-up artist, Jackie Tyson, is the resident chief make-up artist on shows such as X Factor and Britain’s Got Talent meaning she has done the make-up for everyone from Leona Lewis to Susan Boyle and Alexandra Burke to Stacey Solomon. Jackie’s also worked with the likes of Katy Perry, Sienna Miller, Bat For Lashes and Lily Allen.

To achieve this glam look you will need…

A pale base in a light texture, Avon’s Ideal shade in Nude.

Apply a little pinkish powder blush on the apples of the cheek, Apricot by Bobbi Brown and then blend in a little contour under the cheek bone with a powder blush in Sandstone by Bobbi Brown.

Line under the eye with a dark brown eye shadow, Beaver from Cosmetics a la carte.

Use a black ink long wear gel eyeliner from Bobbi Brown in a bold line over the top lid and wing out.

Apply a strip lash from Blink and Go.

Glossy Red Lips finish the look. First apply Lacquer 9 from Cosmetics a la Carte and then add a slick of Glam shine by Loreal in 505

If you want to take this style steal one step further than you can even get the same dark nail polish look which is very much in fashion right now by using something like Rimmel Lasting Finish Nail Polish Black Cherries which will create a dramatic, long lasting effect!

We love this ultra glam look and were really glad to see so many celebs wearing bright, bold colours at the NTA’s this year! Friday, how I’ve missed you!! As you can probably tell, I’m extremely happy that Friday is finally here this week as I’ve sneezed and snuffled my way through the past few days recovering from a horrible bout of man flu cold. Quite frankly anyone would think I was a man, the amount of whining and moaning I’ve done! However, I’m starting to bounce back from the dreaded germs and am here to show you all my top pick of the beauty ‘must haves’ this week!
Witch Hazel Stick

Along with my cold I seem to have developed an outbreak of acne, which is not really helping me when I already look like I’ve been dragged through a hedge backwards to be honest! So, I’ve been combating spots by using this fab, and very handy Witch Hazel Stick. I’m a big fan of Witch Hazel products and always find them to be kind to my skin and that they help reduce the redness of those evil little spots before they manage to get too huge!

Tigi Bed Head Headrush – Shine Spray

This is a great little product that I’ve only recently started using believe it or not. It has been around for a while now but I’ve only just discovered how perfect it is for adding some much needed shine to my hair this week which (like the rest of me) needs brightening up a little! Simply spray a fine mist onto your hair and it creates a sleek, sexy shine. It also smells lovely.

Collection 2000 Concealer Light

Yep, you guessed it, I’ve been using this to disguise the afore mentioned acne outbreak this week! You only need a tiny dab to the skin in a very thin layer and it provides great coverage especially if you then follow it with the product below.

Bare Escentuals Multi-tasking Minerals – Well Rested

I adore Bare Minerals. You get great coverage and hardly have to use any of the powder to create an evenly balanced look. The powder is super fine and it lasts all day without the need to re-do. It comes in a wide variety of shades so choose the one that best matches your skin tone. I’ve gone for ‘Well Rested’ because that’s what I think I should be this weekend! Oh, and because I have pale skin (that’s probably a better reason) if you’re not sure which colour would best suit you simply pop into your local Boots store and they’ll be more than happy to help you.

Qvs Compact Powder Brush

Use this Qvs Compact Powder Brush alongside any powdered foundation to get even coverage. Simply cover the brush with the mineral powder, gently tap a few times to get rid of any excess and apply to the face and neck area as required.
